Man of Steel Goes Gray
The world has seen the new costume for Henry Cavill’s turn as Superman. Adam offers his take on the duds. They’re a bit fussy, the dark new duds. And this guy says, “I’m a storyboard artist, not a design guy.”
Just when I thought my superhero summer was over, I open my e-mail this morning to find a first picture of Henry Cavill in costume as Superman. YAY! I have worked on a lot of Superman cartoons, so I have some pretty clear ideas on how the “Man of Steel” should look. Here’s my reaction to the new duds. Click for the monster-size, and tell us what you think of the new costume …

“Kinda like Superman Returns”? Are you kidding me, dude? How about “Kinda like Chris Reeve”? The S does not need to be … what is that, PLASTIC? Gimme the Chris Reeve cloth costume, and if the filmmakers are SO embarrassed that their superhero dresses like a superhero, I’d let them take the colors halfway between this and Reeve.
At this rate, when they reboot Superman again in 2020, they’ll put him in the actually gray costume that George Reeves wore, only it’ll be made of aluminum and resin.
What makes you think they actually have red trunks on this costume, Adam? I don’t see them in the actual shot and Jim Lee’s new “design” doesn’t have ‘em.
I am hoping you’re right, but I think it’s actually a grey, bumpy, rubbery weird Super-rock-a-billy Superman without trunks from visionary director, what’sisname.
Hi Mark,
I guess the red shorts are my mind filling in the blanks…when I look at the photo again, I can’t really tell what is going on with his belt or shorts! I’ll revisit when more photos come to light…
Rats– I was hoping you had some insider scoop. I guess you have seen by now that the new costume has no trunks? Rats.
